Sergers
Create a “serger” notebook to log tension and other settings, plus you can place thread and fabric samples on
a page, too. Then, the next time you want a certain look, just refer to your notebook to easily recreate the effect.
Having
tension problems and not sure which thread tension needs to be adjusted? Change the threads to four different colors and then
serge a test sample on the fabric. Now you can adjust the tension dials one at a time until you get the right tension. Rethread the machine with one color thread and serge another sample before serging your project.
Magnifying Lamps
Keep your glass
magnifying lamp covered when not in use, especially if it located near a window. Sunlight streaming through the magnifying glass
can quickly start a flame.
Machine Cover-Ups
Want a quick, inexpensive way to make a sewing machine cover? Take a pretty
pillowcase, cut it off at the correct height, square off the corners and stitch.
Dancing and/or Noisy Machines
If you want to
keep your machine from moving/dancing when sewing or reduce the amount of noise the machine makes, then just place a carpet square
under your machine. This will drastically reduce the noise and keep your machine in one spot.
Velcro Thread Catcher
Attach
a 5” strip of Velcro (hook side) to the flatbed of your sewing machine to prevent the mess of clipped thread on the floor. As
you clip, pass the thread over the Velcro, which grabs and holds it securely. Clean the strip after each project.
Cleaning
Irons
Keep a 12” square of netting on hand to clean fusible interfacing off the bottom of your iron. Warm the iron, wad the netting
into a ball, and gently rub the iron with the netting. The netting won’t scratch the surface, yet it quickly removes the adhesive. You can also fold a brown grocery bag over the edge of your ironing board while the iron is hot, rubbing it over the edge until the
adhesive comes.
Fusible Interface
Place a pillowcase over the end of your ironing board when using fusible interfacing or sewing
appliqués to prevent fusible material from getting on the ironing board cover. You can also place a piece of freezer paper over
the top of your ironing board before using fusibles.
