Inside Sew E-Z

First I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day.  Another beautiful day and hopefully everyone was able to spend time with family and friends.

We had another busy week but, that’s what running a store is all about – staying busy.  We love being busy, especially when folks stop by and visit.  Our new 26” long arm quilting machine arrived on Friday and I am anxiously waiting for Jim to get it set-up.  The Baltimore Revisited quilt is finished and it is gorgeous!  This was so much fun, easy and is absolutely gorgeous.  Now, I am putting the finishing touches on the most adorable baby quilt with precious appliquéd embroidered designs.  I hope to have this baby quilt finished by end of the week.   Thanks to Mary Hyatt for stitching out the designs for me – great job!  Next, I’m planning to create another gorgeous Anita Goodesign design, Ascension.  I wish it was completed so I can show it off, but it will be done soon enough.

On Wednesday and Thursday we had an excellent response to the free fabric and patterns.  Our classroom tables were loaded with all types of garment patterns and a wide assortment of fabrics.  There will be some beautiful garments made from all of this.

Not only did we give away free fabrics and patterns, but the remaining patterns and fabrics were donated to The Dwelling Place in Norfolk.  This is a shelter for homeless families.  They teach homeless women and children life skills to help them get back on their feet.  What better skill to teach?  They have some donated machines, but Sew E-Z will also be donating some machines to help their cause.  This is a truly wonderful way to give back and help those that are desperately in need of help.

Dakota Collectives has put some fabulous new embroidery design CDs in our display case.  There are some collections reduced to $19.95.  Stop by and look them over.

We have also received a design collection from Anita Goodesign, containing the most adorable baby designs.  These are applique embroidery with stippling and borders.  It will make the most beautiful baby quilt and a truly wonderful gift.

All the fabric orders from our Northcott Fabric Buyer Day have been submitted and now we wait for them to arrive.  There were plenty of fabrics and patterns ordered.  It’s like Christmas every time a fabric shipment arrives.

We have received the Double Diamond rulers and patterns.  A sample was shown last Saturday using this new ruler and technique.  There will be additional classes in the near future.

Friday night and Saturday, ladies were busy making a beautiful Machine Applique Quilt.  This technique is truly unique and makes doing applique so much easier.  One lady even commented that she was working on a hand applique quilt but was going to start doing it the way it was taught it class.  It is easier and much faster.

Speaking of machine applique, Sheryl Hughes will return in September to teach another machine applique class but this time the pattern is a beautiful snowman/winter theme quilt.  The pattern was created by Vera Mosquera and is called “Frolic”.  This quilt was shown at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show several years ago and everyone went crazy over it.  A sample is on display at the store.

Don’t miss the sew-in starting Friday night at 6pm.  Make a truly unique and one-of-a-kind quilt using the fabric décor samples that were so kindly donated.  These fabric samples are absolutely gorgeous and the quilts will be outstanding.  No class fee.  Just bring your machine, neutral color thread, rotary cutter, ruler, straight pins and other normal sewing tools.  Bring a snack or covered dish Friday night and snacks for Saturday.  It will be a time to sew, have fun and be very creative.  We even have lots of trims to help embellish your quilts.  Don’t miss the fun!

We have received a limited quantity of some really cute baby items.  You can embellish them with your embroidery and make some adorable baby gifts.  Check them out before they are all gone.

Customer Question of the Week

“Do you carry mattresses?”

I had several clever and witty answers in mind, but I went the simple, no we do not carry mattresses.

I should make a Top Ten list of the strangest customer questions, because do you carry mattresses would definitely be among the top ten.  Of course, I’m waiting for someone to ask if we carry used submarine torpedoes, seeing how we are surrounded by naval bases.

Update - Baltimore Revisited

Cost:  $75.00, includes CD, designs & instructions.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 10:00am or 6:00pm.

Make a gorgeous Baltimore Album quilt completely in embroidery.  The Baltimore Revisited collection was inspired by Anita Goodesign’s Baltimore Quilt. The Baltimore Quilt collection was designed years before the concept of Mix and Match quilting was released.  They took a few pieces of the art from that collection and re-digitized them, using a bolder bean stitch and folded fabric borders.  The end result is like nothing you’ve ever seen.  The folded fabric borders really compliment the designs.  Next, they created different borders and transitional blocks to complete the collection, using floral fabrics in shades of slate blue, tan and burgundy, which really compliment the look.  There are 42 unique blocks to select from when creating your quilt.  It takes about 4 yards or less to make the quilt top, even to make the largest size.  Class Supplies:  embroidery machine and hoop, new needle, 1 pre-wound bobbin in white, other regular sewing supplies.  Assorted colors of embroidery thread depending on the colors of your fabrics.  Fabric:  ½ yard each of 4 different fabrics to be used as your sashing, 4 yards of white or off-white fabric for your background, no show mesh stabilizer, non-woven fusible interfacing.  Class Fee:  $75.00 which includes the CD with all the designs and instructions.  Stop by the store to see the sample on display.

Cuddles Corner

Each week I try to find something interesting to put in Cuddles Corner.  I love to share with everyone and am always eager to learn new things.  We never learn it all and are never too old to learn.  Classes are a great way to learn, even if the project is something you are not particularly interested in.  It’s all the tips, tricks and sharing that happen in a class.  Magazines are always publishing new tools, new patterns, new ideas, and much more.  Sometimes we learn a new way to do something without even realizing it.  We learn from each other.

What embroidery, sewing, serging, and quilting tips, tricks, or techniques have you learned that we can share with others?  What new products have you tried and like or dislike?  Send us tips, tricks, and other techniques that we can share with everyone.  Send them to info@sewe-z.com.

In small saucepan over medium heat, cover and cook 1 chopped green bell pepper, 3 tbsp. chopped onion and 1 tbsp. water until peppers are crisp-tender.  Stir in 1 cup diced ham, and then sprinkle mixture over noodle crust.  In a bowl, beat 6 eggs, 1 cup skim milk and 2 tsp. mustard; pour over veggies and ham.

Bake quiche until center is puffy and knife inserted near center comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes.  Let stand 5 minutes, then slice and serve with mixed greens.
